Self-Care: Try These Simple Methods To Improve Your Mood And Mental Health
Last updated on : April 02 2020
We’ve all heard the term self-care, so why is it that so few of us do it? Is it a lack of time? Or is it the misconception that it’s selfish?
Whatever your reason for not practicing self-care is you should understand that ignoring it can have severe impacts on your wellbeing and health.
Yes, self-care can be hard when you have other responsibilities; the relaxing day you’d planned for yourself gets disrupted by a crying baby or your mom calling to see if you can pick up her groceries. However, taking care of yourself doesn’t have to be an all-day endeavor. It can be a quick and fun thing if you do it right.
Also, disregard the idea that self-care is selfish because it’s one of the best things you can do for not only yourself but your loved ones as well.
To clear up the negative connotations around self-care, you first need to understand what self-care is.
What is Self-Care?
Self-care is any activity that promotes suitable physical, mental, and emotional health.
For example, putting aside time to do a business that you enjoy or taking a hot bath is considered self-care because by doing things that make you happy, you’re taking care of your mental health.
When you’re doing these things, you are giving your brain and body a reprieve from the stressors of everyday life.
Why You Need Self-Care
You know you need self-care when your stress and anxiety levels reach an unmanageable level.
Everyone deserves a break now and then to focus on their happiness and enjoy something relaxing instead of stressful. If you never take time to focus on your wants and needs, you risk the chances of burning out.
Here are some ways self-care can help you and some activities you should try.
Better Mental Health
Physical tiredness is something that we are all aware of and have experienced at one point in time. We know how to deal with that, but what about when we become mentally tired?
Whether you’ve taken on a new project at work or you’re having family issues, it can become too much for your brain to handle. Self-care can alleviate some of this mental strain because it gives you a chance to take a mental break and regroup.
Instead of being in go position all the time, you’ll be giving your brain a chance to slow down and process. One way to do this is to make sure you’re getting enough sleep.
Self-care method for better mental health: Sleep
Sleep is an extremely crucial part of self-care because it’s one of the best ways to improve the quality of your life.
When we sleep, our brain slows down to process all of the information gathered throughout the day. Getting a good night’s rest helps people become more resilient to negative thoughts and feelings and helps to prevent sadness, anxiety, and depression.
Sleep deprivation is a common health issue for many people. Some of its causes are stress, lousy sleeping arrangements, or underlying health problems.
Generally, you can fix sleep deprivation by doing simple things like getting a new mattress or putting on some white noise. However, if it’s not so simple for you, then you should consult a doctor for a professional opinion.
When people get stressed or overwhelmed, they tend to get frustrated and sometimes with the wrong people. They may not even be mad at you specifically but take it out on you anyway because of all the pent up frustration.
It can be hard to reign in your emotions when you’re not feeling your best. Self-care can drastically change this by alleviating some of the pressure you feel daily.
Instead of allowing your feelings to build up until you cannot hold them in any more, taking time to yourself can help reduce the pressure. You’ll have relieved some of your frustrations through whatever activity you chose.
Self-care method for improved mood: Music
To improve your mood, try putting on some music. Certain kinds of music can help to relieve stress, decrease anxiety, and calm people considerably.
Jazz and classical are two popular genres of music that people tend to turn to when they need some stress relief. While jazz and classical are known to be calming, that doesn’t mean you have to limit yourself to only those two genres.
Work, family, and life can take a lot out of you. If you’re running on empty, you aren’t going to be as productive as you should be. Spreading yourself too thin can result in a lot of frustration and a lot of mistakes.
Think about it. If you’re studying for more than one test at a time with no breaks, you’re not going to do as well on some as you are others.
By taking care of yourself, you are making sure that you have enough time and energy to spend doing whatever you need to do. By alleviating some of the stress, you’ll be able to put your full attention on tasks that need it.
Self-care method for productivity: Organizing
To improve productivity in one small area of your life, start with your home. The organization of your house can reflect the state of your mental wellbeing. Meaning a disorganized home often reflects a hectic mindset.
Yes, cleaning is productive because your house looks a treat afterward, but it’s also a helpful calming activity. For some people, cleaning isn’t necessarily a chore but a way to relieve stress.
Taking some time to declutter and organize a room with some relaxing music playing in the background might be what you need. Decluttering is good because it can symbolize your new and improved mindset, and make you feel ready to tackle other parts of your life.
Sometimes one of the best ways to learn new things about yourself is in the peace of your own home.
With all of the distractions of the outside world, becoming more self-aware can prove difficult since people tend to always be on the go, and they rarely allow time just to stop and take a breath.
When you practice self-care, you’re allowing yourself quiet time that you otherwise do not get. During this time, you can analyze what makes you who you are.
Learning about yourself is beneficial because it can help you to feel more confident in yourself and at peace in life.
Self-care method for increased self-awareness: Meditation
One thing you can do to help facilitate your self-awareness journey is meditation. Meditation is an excellent activity to help people focus their energy and balance themselves.
Deep breathing is an integral part of meditation and impacts how relaxed a person gets. Just deeply pulling air into your lungs and releasing, can release days worth of stress.
If you’ve never meditated before, start by clearing your mind of all distractions, and direct your attention inwards. Focus on your goals, your life, and what makes you happy.
Don’t expect to have all of the answers right away. It will take a few sessions for you to have the answers to such essential questions.
Additional Self-Care Activities
Take a Bath
Another great thing you can do that is effortless is to take a nice warm bath. The warm water of the tub will help to release tension from your muscles and calm your brain.
Taking a bath is one of the more leisurely activities to do on the list. You don’t need much other than a tub and some warm water.
However, if you want to get the maximum amount of healing benefits from a bath, then try adding some healing bath salts and essential oils to your water. Epsom salt is excellent for adding to the water as it can reduce swelling and soothe muscles.
Essential oils like lavender are beautiful while prepping your bath because it not only smells great but can heal aching muscles as well and promote relaxation.
Light Some Candles
Candles are aesthetically pleasing pieces to place around your home and bring a beauty most people can appreciate. With the right candles, though, you can turn any room into a serene space you’d never want to leave.
Candles with essential oils in them are great for this purpose. Burning calming aromatherapy candles made with oils like lavender, lemon, or eucalyptus can help to relax you after a long day.
Lighting a candle takes only seconds of your day but will have effects that last for hours.
Don’t let anyone tell you that self-care is selfish. Prioritizing your health and wellbeing is not only going to help you but your family and friends as well. Improved mood and overall health are just two of many benefits self-care can bring.
Take some time for yourself. You deserve it.
