Self-care is the practice of taking an active role in protecting one's well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress. Self-care is essential to our lives and our ability to remain positive, healthy, and stress-free.
One of the best times to practice self-care is in the morning. Making time for yourself in the morning sets the tone for your day. Done right, it provides you with feelings of self-worth and love, helping you to focus on what truly matters in life.
As we wake up, we’re rushing around to get ready for work, often skip breakfast, and waste no time getting out the door. But waking up earlier and investing in forms of well-being is much more beneficial for you in the long run.
Here are some ideas.
1. Prepare The Night Before
Prepare for the new day the night before to avoid a mad scramble in the morning. Preparing the night before is a huge stress reliever for you in the morning.
Check what the weather is expected to be and decide on your outfit for the next day. If you’re planning on going to the gym, get your gym bag ready before you go to bed. Prepare your lunch and pop it into the refrigerator, so it stays fresh for the following day.
Some preparation the night before allows your mornings to go by much smoother and gives you an excellent start to your day, free of worry and last minute rushing around.
2. Do An Early Morning Workout
Early morning workouts are hard if you’re someone who likes their beauty sleep, but there are lots of positive effects that come with exercise. With the release of feel-good endorphins, working out helps both your mental and physical state.
Waking up just an hour earlier is more than enough time to fit in some exercise time.
Don't feel you need to rush to the gym; instead, for maximum effect, take your workout outdoors.
Spending part of your morning surrounded by nature is the perfect way to start your day - whether it’s doing morning yoga in your backyard or going for a quick run around your neighborhood. Being outside reconnects you with nature and opens up new paths in your mind.
If you’re a dog-owner, include your pets in the exercise.
Your pups need a little self-care too and connecting with them during this time is calming if nothing else. Begin your day by taking your dog for a walk - it will get you out of the house, provide some physical activity, and your dog will love you for it.

We all tend to favor a shower in the morning because it’s quick and easy. However, what could be a better way to start your day than by taking a long, luxurious bubble bath?
Plenty of doctors advocate having a relaxing bath in the morning and blitzing through a 5-minute shower before hitting the pillow instead.
A bath is a perfect way to relax and finally break out those bath bombs you’ve been dying to use.
Enjoying a morning bath, while practicing some quiet time and reflection will help you regroup before a hectic day.
4. Make Yourself A Wholesome Breakfast
Often, we’re so busy trying to rush out the door that we don’t take the time to make ourselves a wholesome breakfast.
Instead of grabbing a granola bar or apple, change up your morning routine by treating you to a grade A breakfast.
Try a delicious omelet or healthy nut butter and chia seed toast as a delightful way to start your morning.

5. Read A Book
Set aside a little time each morning to do some light reading.
Get up a little early and start your day by entering into another world with a too-good-to-put-down book or staying up to date on local news in the paper.
Allowing yourself just 30 minutes reading time is more than enough time to reset your mind, and prepare mentally for the day.
Reading has multiple benefits, in addition to the knowledge gained, increased vocabulary, and memory improvement, it also stimulates your mind and provides stress reduction and tranquility. All fantastic self-care factors to kick start your day.

As your body is likely to go 7-8 hours with absolutely no water during your slumber, it’s advisable that as soon as you wake up, you enjoy a glass of water.
Drinking water on an empty stomach has a myriad of health benefits from a cleansing of the colon to fighting infections. It's the perfect way to keep your skin and body feeling hydrated, fresh, and ready to go.

7. Change Up Your Hair
Every person is different when it comes to hairstyling.
Some women curl their hair perfectly every morning for the office while others are more relaxed, throw it up in a bun and call it a day.
No matter what you’re used to, changing up your hair can be a great way to do something different in the name of self-love - and turn heads at work or wherever your commitments are for the day.
If you're feeling brave, try a brand-new hair color and sport a different hairstyle to show it off.

8. Avoid Your Phone
Often, the first thing we do when waking up is to check our phones.
A recent study showed that an alarming 61% of people check their phones within the first five minutes of waking up. But did you know that checking your phone first thing in the morning can harm you?
With social media being at an all-time high, many of us are now in an unhealthy habit of comparing ourselves to others. Avoid starting your morning looking at what others are doing in their lives. Instead, ignore your phone, and start your morning thinking positively about yourself, and what you want to achieve during your day.
It’s easy for us to look at our phones first thing in the morning. To limit the risk, don't use your phone as an alarm clock. Instead, use a standard clock to set your alarm.
Additionally, charge or keep your phone away from your bed. If you sleep right next to it, of course, it’s going to be the first thing you’ll check in the morning.
9. Write In Your Journal
Many people find it therapeutic to keep a journal.
One of the ways to deal with any overwhelming emotion is to find a healthy way to express yourself. Journalling is a helpful tool in managing a positive mental attitude. Amongst other things, journaling can help you manage anxiety, reduce stress, and cope with depression.
Some choose to write in their journals at night. But writing in your journal is also a fantastic way to start your morning.
There are numerous kinds of things you can journal. You can use it as a way to express gratitude, write/repeat a list of positive affirmations, recall previous dreams, or reflect on inspirational quotes.
It doesn’t need to be a full page by any means. Dedicating 10 minutes of your day can be hugely beneficial, helping you collect your thoughts and focus on the day ahead.
If you are someone who has anxiety or depression, starting your morning with meditation is the perfect self-care ritual to fit.

Once you get some practice in, it’ll become easier to feel more relaxed in the mornings.
11. Be Grateful
Often, we’re so busy racing out of bed that we don’t give ourselves time to self-reflect, or to show gratitude.
Expressing gratitude is a great way to crowd out negative thoughts and start your day on a positive note.
To start, consider all the things that bring you gratitude and reflect on them in the mornings with a thank you. You can write them down in your journal, repeat them to yourself out loud, or even sing them to yourself.
Whatever way you choose to get them out doesn’t matter as long as you stay mindful of all the fantastic things you have in your life.
Gratitude is a fantastic thing, and being thankful will make you happier, healthier, and leave you feeling optimistic about the challenges of the new day.
12. Do A Brain Buster
Stimulating your brain in the morning is an excellent way to slide into the day.
The next time you’re enjoying your breakfast and reading the newspaper, flip to the back and try out a crossword or sudoku puzzle. Or find some tough teasers here.
There are many benefits to doing brain busters. These benefits include helping to reduce stress, lowering your risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s, and helping to improve your mood.
Even though some of us aren’t exactly in the mood to use lots of brain activity early in the morning, doing so will pay off in the long run.
Finding time for self-care in the mornings will leave you refreshed and better prepared for the new day. Instead of sleeping in for an extra 20 minutes, choose to take advantage of your morning’s and get up and about.
Whatever you decide to do is entirely up to you. Whether you want to relax in a hot tub or fit in a quick workout, doing something productive with your mornings will put you on the right path for the rest of your day.
