Kewl News: June Fashion Recap
Posted on July 08 2016
In June we featured Kristi Murphy, a rising lifestyle blogger and asked fashion blogger Lydie, from Art Becomes You, to style one of our most popular bandage dresses. The result was stunning and gives us style insight into how to pull off chunky chokers and sexy dresses - baby bump and all.
Paris Men's Fashion Week Featured Lots of Socks
It seems that irrespective of the whole Brexit issue, English style still rules—at least in men’s fashion.
British influences were quite evident in the collections showcased on the runway at the event. For Dior, red hand stitching, embroidered patches of skulls and roses on wool black jackets, and short cigarette pants brought in the London punk factor. Walter Van Beirendonck dressed models in brogues and boating blazers, to utilize English fashion in his designs.
During the Paris Men’s Fashion Week we also saw socks being teamed with almost everything - literally. From high ones that reached up to the knees to low socks paired with sandals, socks were everywhere on the runway. In fact, Paul Smith even sent out invitations to his Men’s Week show on pairs of socks. The fashion world is still digesting just what to do and how to handle socks in styles underway.
Kendall Jenner rocks the Givenchy runway in Stunning White Gown
This June, Kendall Jenner, the American supermodel made news by walking on the Givenchy runway at the Paris Men’s Fashion Week in a flawless white gown. The one-shoulder gown had white feather detailing on the bodice and was embellished all over with crystals and rhinestones. Kendall rocked the flowy white dress with her hair pulled back in a slick bun, evil-eye pearl and diamond earrings, and black snake-skin leather boots.
Kendall Jenner’s appearance at the Givenchy Menswear Spring/Summer 2017 show came after a long absence from the ramp, and she more than made up for it with this dazzling look. Since it was showcased at the Men’s Fashion Week, she mixed in a touch of menswear into her look by opting to wear it with a pair of black baggy tuxedo trousers instead of showing off skin with the gown’s hip-high side slit.
Beyoncé and Drake’s Vacation Pics Termed Best Fashion Instagram of the Week
One of the best set of fashion Instagram pictures in June was Drake and Beyoncé’s vacation pics where they were seen enjoying their holidays with frozen daiquiris and ‘lemonade’. While Beyoncé was seen relaxing in Hawaii on a family getaway, lemonade still seemed to be pretty much on her mind as she wore a vibrant yellow sarong while she frolicked on the sandy beaches with husband Jay Z and daughter Blue Ivy. She took the look further by accessorizing her outfit with a lemon charm necklace.
Canadian rapper Drake drew views in style with his Instagram posts of himself while on vacation in the Dominican Republic. Wrapped in a Versace bathrobe, he was photographed with spectacular beach views in the background and a daiquiri in his hand. Drake sealed the look with a sexy, piercing stare at the camera. Drake’s picture received more than 600k likes and 15k comments of admiration - mostly in less than two weeks.
Legendary New York Times Photographer Bill Cunningham Dies
Bill Cunningham was known for a unique take on fashion photography, and the fashion world has been mourning his demise since 25 June, 2016, when he died aged 87 after a stroke.
Cunningham had bagged a job with The New York Times after they noticed his 1978 picture of a candid Greta Garbo. For decades, this legendary street-style fashion photographer was seen riding his bicycle on the streets of New York with his 35-millimeter camera slung casually around his neck.
He was known to capture different aspects of fashions visible on the streets, whether it was fashionable handbags or utilitarian biker shorts. He will certainly be missed, but admirers can take comfort in the fact that he was able to do what he loved right till the end. As Cunningham often said about his career, "It's not work, it’s pleasure."
Fashion Roundup of the BET Awards 2016
The BET Awards were hosted at Los Angeles Microsoft Theater, an event where part of the excitement for fans lies in watching the celebrities display their individual fashion on the silver carpet.
While Alicia Keys styled her silky ebony pantsuit with a shimmery gray head wrap, strappy sandals, and a no-makeup look, Karrueche Tran opted for a flashy look with a black mini dress paired with gold Christian Louboutin sandals.
Artist Janelle Monae also opted for a pantsuit, and she accessorized her black-and-white stripes with a Jimmy Choo clutch, Jennifer Fisher choker and earrings, and Brian Atwood platform shoes.
However, not every celeb shone with their style at the awards show- Tinashe bared all in a completely sheer dress with a black bra and thong underneath. If you aren’t as adventurous and prefer a look that conceals your under garments check out our post What to Wear Under A Bandage Dress.
Willow Smith Lands Her First Chanel Campaign
At 15, Willow Smith is already the face of one of the most well-known fashion brands worldwide. Earlier this year, Chanel announced Willow as their brand ambassador, and June revealed a glimpse of her first campaign with the brand.
In the Fall/Winter 2016 eyewear campaign, which has been photographed by renowned German photographer Karl Lagerfeld, the teenage fashionista is seen in a short black-and-white clip where she whips her famous dreads to the tune of NAO’s “Apple Cherry.”
With this achievement, Willow Smith has joined the ranks of Kristen Stewart, Blake Lively, and Lily Rose Depp—all Chanel ambassadors in the past.
With her remarkable style, Willow brings in the much-needed diversity to the fashion industry, a fact she herself acknowledged when she thanked Chanel at the time of the announcement in March for “expanding the perceptions of beauty.” In a statement from the brand, Willow was described as "a multifaceted artist, writer-composer-singer and actress” who with “her youth and energy charmed Karl Lagerfeld who has invited her to join the family of Chanel muses.”
Blake Lively Shows Off Her Baby Bump in a Sexy Cutout Dress
Celebs have proven time and again that being pregnant can be sexy, and actress Blake Lively is the latest to join the list. She’s in her second pregnancy and showed off her baby bump in style in a stretchy cobalt-blue pencil dress from Cushnie et Ochs that had a small cutout detail at the midriff.
Lively wore this during the promotions of The Shallows in NYC this month, and continued rocking maternity style as she did during her first pregnancy. She pulled back her blonde tresses in a voluminous ponytail that highlighted the dress’ off-the-shoulder neckline and glammed up the look effortlessly with drop earrings. If anyone thought clinging dresses weren’t for maternity style, Blake Lively is who you need to take notes from.
Maria Grazia Chiuri to Become Dior’s First Woman Creative Director
Although most fashion wear is targeted at women, the heads of major fashion luxury brands still continue to be men. Bringing a change to this will be Maria Grazia Chiuri, who is all set to helm French fashion house Dior. There are reports that confirm the news of Chiuri’s appointment as the brand’s Creative Director— making her the first woman head in Dior’s 70-year history.
For almost 30 long years, Maria Grazia Chiuri has worked with Italian designer Pierpaolo Piccioli and since 2008, this formidable duo was at the helm of affairs at Valentino. Their work has been recognized as being instrumental in revitalizing the brand and turning it into one of the most profitable in the business. We hope her appointment brings in a trend of more women designers at top posts in fashion brands.
Gap Inc., Stella McCartney, and Rebecca Minkoff Commit to Equal Pay Pledge
Renowned brand names in fashion signed up for Equal Pay Pledge—a program that takes after President Obama’s Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. In 2014, it was found that a woman working in a full-time position in the United States earned only 79 percent on an average of what a man in a similar, comparable full-time job would earn. This pledge is an effort to pave the way for equality in earnings, and the United State of Women Summit that took place on June 14 in Washington, D.C. highlighted the need for commitments from American companies to close this stark gap in pays of the two genders.
Among the companies that signed up for this pledge last month are fashion brands Stella McCartney, Rebecca Minkoff, and Gap Inc. This gives hope to women in the fashion industry and others as well, with an increasing number of women taking up traditionally male-dominated roles. Other companies that promised fair pay post the summit include beauty brand L'Oréal USA and online retail leader Amazon.
June was full of firsts and lasts. We said goodby to a legendary photographer that opened our eyes to the world of fashion on the streets and beyond. We warmly welcomed diversity to some of the leading high fashion brands and we were entertained on Instagram and runways in the process.
