Insights Into The Male Escort Business And The Women Who Hire Them
Last updated on : September 24 2018
Ok, we admit it, we're curious and thought you, dear reader, might be too.
So we took it upon ourselves to delve deeper into the male escorting business, to see what's there and whether it's worth a second look.
We teamed up with premier UK site Gentlemen4hire to get the insights needed, and access to some of their gorgeous escorts to interview. The Sun and GQ have written about Gentleman4hire, and so they come with a pedigree, and we felt confident listening to them.
And did we learn a lot?
Male Escorts And Companions
The idea of men being hired by women to perform the duties of a partner is not a new concept.
Since the Roman Era, and even before then, women of high society showed a keen interest in gladiators and attractive, well-endowed slaves.
And some of these women were quite explicit in flaunting their interests. A famous example is Messalina, Empress to Claudius, whose promiscuity was legendary.
Who Are The Women Who Pay For Male Companionship
We often think of women who spend their money on male companions as sugar-mamas. Others see them as older spinsters in need. Male escorts call them 'customers' or 'clients.'
But the real question is who they are, and why they do it?
Studies show that a high proportion of US, British and Australian women paying for companionship and sex are busy career professionals in their 30s and 40s.
This finding is contrary to the general thinking that women who hire male escorts are older, wealthier and in the menopausal bracket of 50 and above.
Another online survey of women who employ male escort services revealed that many are white, earn over £80,000 per year in the UK and over $100,000 in the US.
Younger, successful and ambitious women claim to be ‘too busy’ for relationships and not having enough time for love and sex. Their careers and focus on work taking most of their time and precedence.
Time better spent
Others see a male escort service as time better spent than searching their local bar or nightclub for a companion or looking for the perfect Tinder date.
Why? Because they don't want to waste a moment on a bad choice, a time waster who turns out to be a creep, jerk, or worse a thief or pedophile.
Many are educated women, often with graduate degrees and when thinking about the prospect of a relationship feel less guilty about paying for it.
To them, it’s a two-way transaction like any other.
What Women Look For In A Male Escort
Most undoubtedly many want a handsome, attractive man, well-built physically, confident and assertive. They also fancy a male escort that is interesting, mysterious and easy to hold a conversation.
However, others want escorts to detract attention or to match their appearance. They want boy-next-door looks to avoid awkward questions.
For lesbian businesswomen, a nondescript date doesn't raise any eyebrows, nor for the girl who appears with a partner at the office party for the first time.
Male escort sites also vary widely, to cater for these differences in taste.
Some carry escorts to suit your fantasy with shirtless muscular men on display. Others show off a range, from young to middle-aged, or muscular to not so muscular.
And others include female and gay escorts catering to the needs of men or adventurous couples.
The Job Of A Male Escort
To set the record straight no one grows up aspiring to be a male escort.
It’s not your typical career path, and like many other careers, men tend to get drawn by curiosity or necessity and later on the job grows on them.
For most people when they hear the phrase "male escort," they typically think escorts get paid for sex. While this is true to an extent, there's more to it than meets the eye.
“Typically I get paid by women to accompany them to birthday parties, conferences, weddings, dinner dates, family dinners, paid vacations, where I play the role of an accomplished, alpha male boyfriend. So, in essence, I’m more of a boyfriend for hire but without the sex.”, Says one escort from the agency we interviewed.
However, if sex happens between a client and the escort, that’s between them. Of соurѕе, if уоu hаvе wаtсhеd аn еріѕоdе оf Shоwtіmе'ѕ Gіgоlоѕ, then you are рrеttу fаmіlіаr wіth whаt gоes оn behind сlоѕеd doors.
And we're not going to beat about the bush here, a large proportion of these interactions do end in sex - because that is what the woman is after.
Prostitution v Escorting
There is a stark difference between prostitution and escorting.
Under U.S. and UK law and in many other countries around the world, prostitution is illegal. However male escorts are paid only for their company and not to have sex, and this approach is perfectly legal.
“If somebody calls the agency and he or she clearly states that they intend to look for a sexual service, then that conversation will go no further,” says the owner of a well known male escort business.
Given the strong preconceived notions of sex and escorts and the importance of agencies sticking to the law. I put their claim to the test by calling one.
A woman answered the phone. She had a soft voice and was cordial.
In order not to raise suspicion I asked for details about their services and other things. The lady on the phone was kind enough to let me in on a few details about the men I had chosen.
Then it was time for me to ask the million-dollar question.
So I asked what if I wanted the male escort only for sex? She politely said they do not provide such a service. I insisted and the next thing I knew she hung up on me.
No one likes being hung up on, but I have to admit, it was a rigid way of telling sex-crazed women that this is not what they do.
How Much Does A Male Escort Cost?
According to our industry source, male escorts can charge anywhere from $1000 for a four-hour appointment to $2000 for an overnight date, $3,000 for a 24-hour period and $5,000 to $6000 for a weekend.
However, the earning power depends on the man in question.
It’s merely economics 101 – if demand is more significant than supply, then the prices go up. Meaning if more women demand the services of a particular male, it becomes more expensive to book him and thus his potential earnings increase.
Just like in sales, the escorts have to be passionate and good at what they do for them to command a hefty price.
Stigmas and Prejudices
It isn’t to say the male escort industry is all bread and butter, Oh! Far from it.
The stigma and prejudice against people in this line of work are still prevalent irrespective of the efforts to alter perceptions and attitudes.
While conditions are better for male escorts now than they were in the past, there is still much room for improvement.
Speaking to some of the influential figures in the male escort business, they say it’s like any other business and that the most challenging parts are finding quality escorts, arranging dates between clients and escorts and then following up.
They also claim to be getting an increasing amount of younger and successful women as clients.
It's possible a wider variety of women are using their services than we think
Compared with women who are very judgmental, a new breed of women possibly sees male escorting as a means to an end.
A faster and safer route to get a man in their life without all the relationship troubles. Sometimes this is for companionship, other times for comfort and sex.
After all, why should a woman waste time getting made up, dressed up and go to a bar on a Sunday night waiting for a man only to end up with the week’s worst? Right!
However, the industry is struggling with acceptance
There is still a severe stigma attached to the industry, and most women won't admit to using its services or refuse to use them at all - because of the sex worker connotations.
But there is no doubt that there is demand, and that this demand is coming from a broader spectrum of female society.
Our view is that we need to keep an open mind. And that provided the services are legal, wholesome and in keeping with our wishes and desires we are supportive.
What we choose to do is up to us yes.
