The start of a new year is a great time to reset old habits and begin creating a few exciting new ones for your wardrobe, health, and lifestyle. Along with attending a smashing New Year’s Eve party, it is tradition to decide on some New Year’s resolutions to kick off your next 365 days. Although it is an unfortunate truth that most people do not really end up sticking to their new year resolutions we encourage you to do something a bit different this year.


From losing weight and hitting the gym regularly to saving money for traveling, resolutions are often easier said than done - and with good reason. The trick to sticking with your New Year’s resolution is to make each one bite-sized and easy to achieve while still making a dent into your overall yearly goals. We believe that there is no better time to overhaul your fashion and beauty habits than right now. Here are a few style-specific resolutions that are easy to stay true to and that will serve to upstyle your wardrobe and beauty regimen completely, affordably, and realistically.

Drink more water this year.

It is easy to remember that you need to drink plenty of water during the summer months as your body gives you ample clues that you are dehydrated. However, the truth is that your body needs hydrating throughout the year. According to the Mayo Clinic, women need to consume at least 2.2 liters of water every single day. When you break it down, that comes up to about 9 glasses of plain water.


Not only does water energize and hydrate your body, it is also helps you control your calorie intake and does wonders for your skin. For the new year, ensure that you keep a bottle of clean drinking water with you – in the car, at work, in your bag, etc. During lunch and dinner, reach for fruits and vegetables that contain a high water content.

Explore your own kind of fashion.

Every fashionista has been tempted to explore fashion in a whole new light with brand new details. You most likely have a few makeup and wardrobe staples that you always bank on to create your signature look but this year explore and expand your fashion palette differently.


This new year resolve to take more beauty and fashion risks. Instead of always going for bling jewelry try styles that are bit more timeless and classic like pearls and rare stones. Instead of solid black opt for stripes or polka dots with black base colors. Even if you have never worn bright red lipstick or figure-hugging dresses before go out on a limb and explore your fashion sense.

Rejuvenate, invigorate, and refresh daily.

After a long work day you likely are exhausted and fall onto your favorite sofa or chair with your preferred drink within moments of walking through the door. Most of us cannot wait to just drop into bed to catch some zzz’s.


While getting into bed two minutes early might sound like a tempting prospect, pledge to wash your face thoroughly before sleeping. It is has been known that makeup residue as well as impure particles that cling to your skin often result in clogged pores and cause acne and oily skin. Your skin naturally repairs itself, however, it is much more effective if you ensure your skin is clean and fresh.


If you do not have the energy to go through a full skincare routine, stash some alcohol-free makeup removal wipes in your night-stand and do a quick wipe of your face.

Repurpose and upstyle your wardrobe.

Upstyling your wardrobe does not necessarily mean spending more money on buying new clothes. Upstyling is simply taking what you own and reinventing it. Instead of hitting the stores or making online shopping your new hobby, head to your existing wardrobe to find and repurpose your clothes.


We’ve all got stuff that we have not worn for a few months or years that are just taking up space in the wardrobe. Look for closet staples that shine with the right accessories you already own and pair them together differently. Protect your skin and glow.

Regardless of complexion or your skin type (dry or oily) wearing sunscreen is an imperative part to protecting it and preserving your feminine glow. If the days are overcast or you intend to spend most of your time indoors, do not skip your sunscreen because you still need it. Care for your skin and make it a resolution to wear sunscreen every single day to protect against wrinkles, freckles, and other blemishes.


When it comes to reducing fine lines and wrinkles and maintaining glowing, beautiful skin, you just cannot do without a dollop of retinol. Choose healthy food options.

This New Year’s resolution is likely to be at the very top of your list. During the post-holiday season we begin to feel guilty about all our splurging and are eager to get back in the gym. While holidays are the time to enjoy holiday treats, the New Year is a reminder to begin eating healthy and make a commitment to daily exercise. However, you do not need to build Rome in one day and take on full exercise regimes quickly.


Instead opt for small changes that go a long way in improving your health and new healthier lifestyle. Start small by adding more fruit to your diet, switching to fat-free or low-fat milk, consuming less salt, curbing processed foods in your diet, choosing water over sugary drinks, and eating more whole grains and lean proteins.


The first step to healthy eating is understanding that crash diets are not the way to go. Start eating healthy daily and the results are sure to deliver. Healthy eating gives you glowing skin, shiny hair, stronger nails, and more energy.

Add a bit flavor, color, and texture to your closet.  

There are numerous benefits of wearing black – it is classy, elegant, easy to match, and saves you many laundry woes. However, if you are hoping to spice up your wardrobe this year, consider adding some dollops of color to your ensemble. If you do not want to commit to a bright color pop dress just as yet, take it slow by adding a colorful scarf, accessories, pumps, or a hat to your wardrobe.

Try a new hairstyle.

Stepping out in a new hairstyle is the easiest way to change the way you look dramatically and often a great way to start the new year. Resolve to change your hairstyle this year in either big or small ways. Try highlights to freshen your look or consider taking off a few inches for more edge.


Those of us who are commitment-phobic and wouldn’t dream of radically changing the length of our hair or its style start small by switching to a new hair part or bun style can really make the difference. Most of us have been wearing the same hair part (middle or either side) since high school but why not move it slightly or get rid of it altogether? Coco Chanel once said, “A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life,” and we couldn’t agree more.

Grab new undergarments.

Wearing the right set of undergarments adds plenty of unseen confidence and oomph to your stride. If you have a stash of underclothes that have visibly seen better days, let them go. Invest in some good quality, comfortable, and well-fitting bras and panties this year. Find them in the least likely places as well. Off brand stores such as Ross and TJ Maxx are great finding fashion bras featuring prints and push-up designs. Macy’s and Nordstroms  often run monthly sales of buy 3 get one half off so keep an eye out for those as well.

Clean out your makeup drawer.

In general, it pays to remember that moist and creamy makeup products have a shorter shelf life than other cosmetics. In the new year make it a point to clean out your makeup drawer once every few months to keep things fresh and in wear condition. Always remember to freshen up your lipgloss and lipstick as well. Most powder-based foundations, eyeshadows and blushes are wearable for up to 18 months unless otherwise specified, while cream concealers, blushes, and lip liners are good for a year.


Mascaras need to be replaced every three months or possibly sooner. The trick to realizing your mascara needs to be changed out is excessive clumping. Liquid-based eyeliners are wearable for up to 6 months. Cleaning out your makeup drawer ensures that you do not end up using expired products on your skin while also helping you be more organized and on top of your beauty routine.

Choose pointy-toe styles more often.

The right pair of shoes can change the whole look, texture, and style of your outfit. Statement heels in bright colors as well as nude pumps that make your legs seem endless are great options when you are trying to upstyle your wardrobe without the cost. A good pair of heels help you radiate confidence, improve your posture, maintain your sexy, command authority, and polish your overall look with a neat little bow. 


If you are looking to modernize your shoe collection, reach for a pointy-toed pair. Tapered toe shoes are constantly making it on and off fashion to do lists because they are incredibly flattering to a woman’s legs. Whether you are pairing them with denim, a slim pencil skirt, a bandage dress or wide-leg trousers, pointy toes complete any look.


Keep in mind that these shoes should be comfortable and not pinch your toes. There are also several inserts and pads to ensure comfortable fit for extended periods. A good rule of thumb is to ensure that the shoes are half a size bigger than your usual round-toed pairs, with a heel that runs about 2 inches or so. To create the illusion of longer legs, opt for pointy toe shoes that closely match your skin tone.

Head to bed earlier for more beauty rest.  

We cannot stress this enough – there’s a reason why a goodnight’s sleep is called “beauty sleep”. Getting enough sleep each night is paramount to your beauty regimen as well as a contributing factor in your overall health. For better sleep purchase blackout curtains to block all ambient light as well as consider an eye mask and try to get at least 7-8 hours of undisturbed sleep as much as possible. After a goodnight’s sleep, step out in a well put-together outfit from your upstyled wardrobe with a face as fresh as morning dew.


When you make your beauty and fashion resolutions for the new year, remember that the smallest of changes have larger than life effects. So drink an extra glass of water and invest in a few key trend accessories to make a fashion statement.
