The Official Guide to Printed Leggings
Posted on July 08 2015
Leggings are in. We see them at the gym, at work, at home, at school, and everywhere in-between. They are a fashion trend that spiked in the 1980s and made a lethal come back in 2006. Some of us were simply horrified about the fashion disasters they often present while most of us welcomed their rise because we could be comfy and fashionable at the same time.
We all are wondering just how far we are allowed to go with leggings and if wearing them is a good or bad idea. When they first re-appeared in 2006 we thought perhaps it was a passing trend much like harem pants but they seem to be sticking it out. Women are embracing leggings as a go-to without thought and rightly so.
If printed leggings are to be around for the next couple of years we have to face the hard questions: how do we wear them and how do we choose between them all? They are proving to not be a passing trend that picked up steam and slowly fizzled out (like the 2013 leather skirt thing) but rather are assuming the role of closet staples like our jeans and tennis shoes.
In this post we cover the reasons we love them, the types of leggings available, and just what makes a pair of leggings a suitable fashionista must have. If you having a hard time deciding between you favorite pair of leggings and skinny jeans we have covered that in another article titled, Leggings vs. Skinny Jeans: How to Choose.
Why We All Love Printed Leggings
What we love about printed leggings is that they communicate things about our personality we usually would keep to ourselves. Telling the world we are Marvel comics fans is not something we all opt to do regularly but putting on a pair of comfy Captain America leggings clearly communicates the same thing.
Likewise telling the world you secretly wish you were a peacock is easier to say through a pair of peacock leggings. Galaxy leggings take us far way and unicorn leggings give us a fantasy. We love leggings because they empower us and give us the confidence to display our unique style in simple, straightforward effort.
With all the styles and printed leggings out there a pair can make or break your look. Leggings are fitted and designed to hug your tush and display your dierre in tempting and teasing fashion.
For all the nay-sayers in the fashion industry wanting to burn each pair of leggings I have come to one conclusion: leggings give wearers confidence to be comfortable in their own skin and you hardly find that anywhere nowadays.
Like swimwear - leggings are not very forgiving yet for some reason we tend to love that tiny feature about them. We share our curves proudly when we put on leggings and well - that is the very heart of the matter.
Types of Leggings
Under the umbrella and broad term leggings you find an array of styles, designs, and fabrics within them. Although there are several different types of leggings most pairs feature the same basic qualities. They are designed and made to be tight and snug around your bottom, thighs, and legs.
Additionally leggings tend to come in one-size per category that fits most women. If you are size 2-12 you’ll want to shop leggings in juniors or misses categories often labeled one-size while women sizes 14-24 prefer the fit of leggings labeled XL or one-plus.
Due to their easy ability to stretch, leggings are quite comfy and that is what has prompted the varying types of leggings. These types include jeggings, printed or solid leggings, leather leggings, and active wear leggings.
Jeggings look exactly like jeans but are easier to break in and immediately comfortable. Leather leggings are often found in upscale trending boutiques and are usually paired with stilettos. Printed and solid leggings are everywhere and activewear leggings are ideal for working out and feature cotton blends.
Most leggings are made of a polyester and spandex blend. Polyester ensures that hues and prints are vibrant and crisp because it’s a synthetic fabric that takes dyes very well. While activewear leggings tend to feature cotton and spandex blends as cotton is a breathable natural fiber that allows for more comfort to wearers as we sweat.
How to Choose the Right Pair of Leggings
The most amazing part of leggings is their universal and versatile nature. You put them on anytime and anywhere and never have to worry about the outcome.
Choosing a pair of leggings involves understanding where you plan to wear them and how often. If you love customizing your looks in elaborate detail then sporting green mermaid leggings and with a breezy blouse, straw sun hat, and oversized bag is an outfit you’ll plan and enjoy sporadically.
Considering how often you plan to wear your leggings helps you determine the quality of the leggings you need.
Avoid cheap leggings if you plan to wear them frequently because they have a tendency to lose form and gain fabric pills after several washes. Pilling occurs when the threads in the fabric split from the strain or wearing and constant laundering.
Higher quality leggings tend to stand up to more laundering and maintain their vibrant hues.
How to Care for Your Leggings
As I mentioned most leggings are made of a unique polyester and spandex blend. I recommend machine washing your leggings on a cold cycle and then hanging them to dry. Leggings can be tumble dried on low, however, I always opt to hang my leggings to preserve their color, form, and prints.
