We browse Le Stylo Rouge regularly. It's a blog so refreshing and real that it's really hard not to stop and simply stay awhile. Behind this raw and sophisticated gem is Ashley - self proclaimed smart mouth with a shoe problem. I got to sit down with Ashley and probe her thoughts on style, fashion, and life. The result was just as refreshing as Le Stylo Rouge itself.
Ashley, tell us about your blog. Why did you start it?
My blog is a playground for my experiments in style. I'll try just about anything trend-wise, with the goal of making it not so flash-in-the-pan or too scary/avant garde for my home in the Midwest. There are lots of stripes, ankle boots, skinny shredded denim, and leather pieces as recurring themes, with a frequent kick of neon in the spring and summer. But mostly I float between style personalities, mixing boho with 90s pieces, classic with a bit of a rock edge, etc.
Mixing it up is always in style. How did you learn to blog and what other fashion bloggers do you love and follow that inspire you?
I'm a writer + content strategist, and have been on the Internet since puberty, so creating online content is sort of second nature at this point. It's about trying, wading in, seeing what your voice is, learning what you don't know, fumbling a bit, and eventually landing in a place where you are just out there running a blog. It's a process, for sure.
I'm really inspired by bloggers who have a down to earth, straightforward voice and inspire me to push through conventional safe styling and try something different. Anna from See Jane and Danielle from We Wore What come to mind.
If you had to choose - who are your top three high fashion designers?
I'm a content strategist- which is essentially what you get when you combine an English major and a computer nerd. Lots of messaging based on business needs, audience expectations, and platform capability. I have three super cute + ornery rat terriers who are beyond spoiled, and a great set of friends and family to keep me happy and grounded.
Friends and family tend to do that. What inspires your personal style? Who are your influencers?
A little bit of everything, really. Like I said, I'll try just about anything. Right now, there's quite a bit of rock 'n roll elements added to outfits to make them tougher: leather, studs, rips, etc. Lots of ankle boots. Lots of leather jackets with strong shoulders. The summer is here in the States, so I'm all about adding a boho feel where I can: floaty rompers, kimonos, etc.
I'm really influenced by street style of the bigger cities: NYC + London for their toughness and attitude; LA for that laid-back California vibe.
California meets London? I can get with that. So tell me about a few of your go-to outfits?
My tried-and-true: skinny, high-waisted faded black jeans (probably with the knees ripped out), a killer pair of pumps, fitted muscle tank with a leather jacket thrown over the shoulders, and a fair amount of dainty + layered gold jewelry. If it's summer, I'll swap out the jeans for a pair of slouchy black trouser shorts. I wear that outfit just about anywhere, but it really plays for a night out when you want a cool, slightly tough look.
