12 Fashion Trends in 2016 We’ll Say Goodbye Too (Maybe)
Posted on January 10 2017
Can you believe we said goodbye to 2016 already? The year 2016 gave us quite a few fashion trends to remember – Hillary Clinton’s pantsuits made international news and athleisure wear continued its popular reign from 2015. As with every year, there were certain fashion trends that we loved and some that we will not be missing much in the new year.
From bizarre ones like septum piercings and glitter beards (for men) to interesting accessories and comfort wear like mom jeans and jumpsuits, fashion in 2016 was varied and memorable. However, it is time to retire some trends as we step into 2017. Here are 12 fashion trends from the previous year that we are more than pleased to say goodbye to.
Well, this is one trend that we absolutely loved! These jackets could be worn by one and all, and looked good with almost every outfit. Plus, the comfort. We love comfort here at The Kewl Shop. Bomber jackets gave a look of balance and versatility. One day you were chic and the next you were dare devil sexy.
The jackets were available in every variant from plain black to sequined and satin versions. We also saw these jackets become favorites of everyday people and celebrities alike. You may have even seen them on the runway. Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid sported bomber jackets with leggings and heels with winning cool girl style.
Although trends indicate this one has overstayed its welcome, we are not sure fashionista’s everywhere are on the same page and willing to let this style go in 2017.
A-listers seemed to love leggings in 2016, and so did we! This trend reigned supreme last year and we are hoping that it stays cool this year too. Stylish, comfortable, super-stretchy, and smart – there is almost nothing about leggings that women did not love. And as the trend caught on, this bottom wear became available in different colors, patterns, details, and sensational prints.
Quality leggings shape your booty and give you curves. You can style them for just about every occasion. Pair them with anything and in any weather, and the look easily comes together. In some respects leggings reintroduced us to the phenomenon of skinny jeans - a style we fell in love with all over again in 2016.
Simple yet effective enough to bring a stylish twist to any regular outfit – asymmetric scarf hems was another trend that received much love in 2016. Although the look has been around for a few years, it ruled the roost in 2016 with women opting for asymmetric hemlines on dresses, skirts, tops, and shirts.
Asymmetric hems gave us dimension and style that combined classy chic with a streetwear edge that was incredibly versatile. An asymmetrical hem on a dress or skirt added a fun, flirty touch while tees and sweaters got a softer silhouette. It looked stunning on runway models and the everyday woman alike, making this hemline another fashion trend that we absolutely loved we do not wish to bid adieu to.
Band tees and tour merch
You probably picked up quite a few band tees last year – this trend was everywhere! While it is okay to support your favorite band with a T-shirt bought at the merch tent or other outlets, we are not a fan of spending hundreds of dollars for something that almost every other person will be wearing.
High-end tour merch (remember ‘Pablo’ emblazoned everywhere?) caught on big time, and there were also knock-offs flooding the markets everywhere, but we will not really be missing it anytime soon. In fact, we are not even sure that everyone who wore band tees even listened to their songs.
While off-shoulder outfits look cool and sexy, the ubiquitous cold shoulder look of 2016 is not something we were really gushing over. The cut-outs looked misplaced at best, and who wants a tan on just the shoulder joints (considering that this was perfectly acceptable day wear)?
If it about exposing your shoulders, why not go with a nice strapless number instead? Although cold-shoulder tops seemed to be a hit with many fashionistas we are not quite regretting saying goodbye to this particular fashion trend in 2017.
Emoji-printed clothes and accessories
Have Facebook, Whatsapp, and other apps not taken over our life already? Honestly, it is difficult to understand the need to wear emojis all over your body. Emoji legging, tops, shirts, pajamas, sweatshirts, fake jewelry, phone cases – these were all over the place. Artistic and interesting prints on clothes receive a thumbs-up, but those brightly-colored pictures of different facial expressions were just bordering on tacky.
While celebrities and socialites rushed to get their customized emojis online, many of us enjoyed using them during casual text conversations. But to wear these characters on our actual clothing - fashionista’s everywhere struggled to decide if it was what we wanted.
These were invented for clear and fun conversations using our phones and screens, and they should perhaps stay where they were meant to be: screens only please in 2017.
Slip Over T-shirts
This fashion trend made a reappearance from the 90s, and while it seemed cool for a while, it was overdone and started feeling too old school for 2016. Self-conscious layering took on a whole new meaning with women wearing slips over dresses, T-shirts, and blouses.
There are certain trends that although cannot entirely be termed unsightly, need to retire after a while. The slip-over-dress style is one of them.
This is one style that women seem to have a love-hate relationship with. Carried over into 2016, harem pants can no doubt be comfortable to wear, but perhaps it is best for when you are lazing around at home.
Some chose to wear these pants for a slimming effect, but it does not quite make you look prim and stylish. Also, most footwear options run the risk of looking mismatched with harem styled pants. If you are going for the Indian traditional look, opt for a salwar-kameez instead or wear a kurta with jeans for a fusion style. Bottom wear that makes one look shorter and somewhat shabby – no thank you, we are happy to say goodbye to harem pants for now.
Now bodysuits are not half bad – functional, cute, and stylish, these were favored by many celebrities and socialist in 2016. These figure-hugging suits are great when you want to flaunt those curves that you have worked so hard to get, but the lace-up and sheer ones are not really the best versions of this trend in our opinion.
Kim Kardashian flashed quite a bit of skin in one that made news in 2016. Perhaps it is best that we bid farewell to this fashion trend in 2017 – unless the occasion calls for wearing bedroom outfits outdoors!
It would not be wrong to call 2016 the year of the unicorn. Clothes, bags, shoes, hair, cakes - unicorns were on everything during the year! However, it stopped being cute after a while. There are other styles in high street fashion that we hope to see in the New Year, but it is time to put the unicorn trend to rest and leave it behind in 2016.
It is a classic case of fashion history repeating itself. Chokers made a comeback in 2016’s fashion, and how? These accessories graced the necks of models on the runway, celebs, college-goers, and mature women alike. Actually, these started appearing back in 2015, but took the fashion world by storm the following year. The trend soon shifted from thin, dainty pieces to chunky and multi-layered necklaces that became more of an eyesore than a style statement. While we do love our thinner chokers, it is time to bid farewell.
In another case of luxury bedroom wear turning into a fashion trend, fur slippers made an entry in 2016. Even big names like Gucci jumped on this bandwagon with their furry shoes, and soon it was all over Instagram. But if we are talking about practicality, this trend does not even come close – think about what all can get caught in the fur when you are out walking on the street. Fur-lined footwear should remain house slippers.
You may have adopted one or more of these fashion trends in the year that just ended, but fortunately or unfortunately, these are not likely to be carried over to 2017. A few of these fashion trends may tiptoe into the beginning of 2017, however, most we likely won’t see again for some time.
At the end of the day, your personal style should be something that portrays your personality and make you feel confident as well as comfortable – be your fabulous, unapologetic, and beautiful self in 2017.
