Kewl News: May Recap
Posted on June 06 2016
Can you believe that we’re nearly halfway through the year 2016 already - how time flies!
With the month of May came lovely rain with promises of our favorite June blooms and an array of crazy tours, chic fashion innovation, and everything in between. From Rihanna’s wild style on the road to saying goodbye to Scandal - this month was bananas.
Rihanna's ANTI World Tour Outfits
The Anti World Tour is the seventh concert tour by the bestselling artist Rihanna in support of her eighth studio album Anti. Her Anti World Tour has 71-dates planned across North America, Europe, and finishing up in the United Arab Emirates. Which designer outfit is Rihanna going to be wearing to her chart topping song “Work”?
Rihanna started out wearing a white elongated coat created by Craig Green, a bodysuit designed by Adam Selman and chap boots by Giuseppe Zanotti. Her next look was a custom catsuit designed by Adam Selman and shoes by Manolo Blahnik.
Another stunning outfit from her tour was a hooded coat and a jumpsuit from Armani Privé with heels once again by Manolo Blahnik. Her final look was a custom suit from Y/Project and a La Roxx Bodysuit. The brand by Belgian designer Glenn Martens has just been named a finalist of the 2016 LVMH Prize.
Fashion Moments from the Season Finale of Scandal
The season finale of the television drama series Scandal was a much awaited one.
A major aspect of the season finale was Kerry Washington's character Olivia's frequent outfit changes.
During the course of all the twists and turns in the White House, Washington's wardrobe has undergone a drastic change, from her typical gladiator looks to bright red wrap coats and royal blue cardigans.
This changed character is a strong, determined one, who does not work for others but is her own person.
Olivia attended a white-tie dinner at the White House in the first episode wearing a Rubin Singer stunner which she paired with Tiffany & Co. jewels.
Cut to the season finale at the Republican convention, where Olivia wears a Nordstrom tank with Vivienne Westwood jacket, Giorgio Armani pants, Manolo Blahnik pumps, and a Prada purse, while Mellie wears a bright red Christian Dior blazer and skirt, a St. John shell, and Armani shoes.
The lovely ladies sure gave us fashion goals for the rest of the year.
MET Gala 2016 Style Roundup
The most glamorous red carpet event of the year for the fashion industry took place this month.
The MET Gala is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City. The yearly event is seen as the grand opening of the Costume Institute's fashion exhibit.
This year the theme Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology set the tone for the annual exhibit.
While some celebrities made for an especially glittering affair by successfully merging couture and technology to fit with the event’s theme, others literally looked like they jumped out from the time machine - it was impressive and crazy.
Beyoncé wore an elegant Givenchy Haute Couture dress and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry while Blake Lively paired her Lorraine Schwartz jewelry with a Burberry dress. Taylor Swift rocked her look in a metallic Louis Vuitton dress teamed with strappy knee-high heels. Kim Kardashian wore a futuristic silver Balmain gown, while Kendall Jenner looked stunning in a fishnet Versace ensemble. Katy Perry channeled an otherworldly look in a black and gold Prada gown with bleached eyebrows.
Nicolas Ghesquière focuses on Brazil for the Louis Vuitton Cruise Collection
It was surprising to find a fashion extravaganza on this scale being staged in a nation that is struggling with recession, facing a major health crisis over the Zika virus, and hosting the Olympic Games in two months time.
Yet - the event went off without a hitch. French fashion designer Nicolas Ghesquière took inspiration from the image of Brazil for his cruise collection, while focusing on a nostalgic Ipanema glamour and the country’s sporting heritage.
Four mega brands – Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Christian Dior and Gucci participated in the cruise season and each brand competed for the most exotic locations and venues. This year Chanel staged its cruise show in Cuba, Dior’s show was staged at Blenheim Palace, and Gucci’s at Westminster Abbey.
Louis Vuitton models descended the catwalk at the Mac Niterói art gallery wearing parachute-silk cape-backed dresses with wetsuit zippers, and silk blouses inspired by the incredible paintings of Pelé created by the Brazilian artist Aldemir Martins.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Opened Row’s First New York Store
This May, the brand's second flagship store was opened on a quiet stretch of the Upper East Side. Although the label is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the New York store is only the second store; its first store is located in Los Angeles.
The celebrities seen wearing The Row include Michelle Obama, Jessica Biel, Julianne Moore, Selena Gomez, Reese Witherspoon and Chrissy Teigen.
The twins designed the store from top to bottom with the French interior designer Jacques Grange, whose most renowned previous retail client was Yves Saint Laurent.
The store looks more like a tastefully appointed manse than a traditional retail shop. Its opening quietly explains why the twins declined to participate in the Netflix spin off Fuller House this year.
Diane von Furstenberg named Scottish designer Jonathan Saunders her Creative Successor
Diane von Furstenberg is best known for introducing the knitted jersey "wrap dress”.
Due to its influence on women's fashion, this dress features in the collection of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) awarded her the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005 and named her as their president.
Diane von Furstenberg has named a presumptive heir for the company that bears her name — and he is a man!
Ms. von Furstenberg announced later this May that she had appointed the Scottish designer Jonathan Saunders as chief creative officer. He is to be in charge of all aspects of design for the company including fashion, art direction, and advertising.
The fashion maven shall continue as chairwoman and intends to focus on her work with women, public speaking, and her other philanthropic endeavors.
Rihanna Becomes First Celebrity to Collaborate With Dior on Sunglasses
It is just another day and just another one of Rihanna’s collaborations.
Rihanna has created a range of futuristic sunglasses in collaboration with Dior as part of her brand ambassadorship and named it "Rihanna”.
The pair of futuristic iridescent Star Trek-inspired frames will be made available in six variations.
These include silver, pink, blue, green and red styles that are expected to retail for $840. The last variant will be a stunning deluxe 24-karat gold-plated version slated to sell for $1,950! The sunglasses will be sold exclusively at Dior stores in early June.
Kim Kardashian Pays $1 Million a Year for Wardrobe Styling to Australian Fashion Director
Kim Kardashian and Christine Centenera have become the best of friends, and who do you think connected them both? None other than Kanye West himself.
The friendship has proved very beneficial for Centenera as she is reportedly paid as much as $1 million by Kardashian-West for wardrobe styling!
Kardashian has referred to Centenera as one of her favorite fashionistas alongside Carine Roitfeld, ex-editor-in-chief for Vogue Paris. Centenera is well-known as the world’s biggest street style stars, and based on the high-fashion that Kardashian-West has been sporting at events, we’d have to say that this is a job well done.
Kate Moss Announces Her New Collection with Equipment
Kate Moss is an English model who rose to fame in the early 1990s as part of the heroine chic fashion movement. She designed clothes for Topshop in 2007, which were launched in the chain's 225 UK stores.
This May she is set to launch her Kate Moss x Equipment capsule collection for the shirt company.
When asked what she likes about Equipment shirts she shares, “I’m a tomboy, really; I was always stealing Jamie’s [Hince] Equipment shirts. They’re just easy to wear, to pull on as a cover-up or whatever. The fabric just sits on your skin so nicely.”
She has chosen Daria Werbowy for photographing and Susie Cave for her video.
