Kewl News - April Recap
Posted on May 06 2016
Fashion in April 2016 was a roller coaster ride. April brought unexpected changes to the industry of fashion alongside loss, innovation, and progress. There have been plenty of events during the past 30 days that have literally changed the course of the fashion industry, and its allies for the rest of the year. In a nutshell, here are the things you need to know in our quick April fashion recap.
Beyoncé launched the Visual Album ‘Lemonade’
‘Lemonade’ is not just another album from Queen Bey, it is one of the most powerful visual albums to ever be released. This album follows a story of unfaithfulness and reconciliation, and also covers the life experienced by a black woman. A number of songs on the album are characterized by chapter titles such ‘Denial’, ‘Emptiness’, ‘Apathy’, and ‘Resurrection’. The visual album tells a story and are connected by Warsan Shire’s poetry voiced by Beyoncé.
What makes this album so visually appealing is the fact that it has cameos from a number of powerful women, including, Serena Williams, Winnie Harlow, Quvenzhane Wallis, Ava Clarke, and Amanda Sternberg. The album also featured Creole chef Leah Chase, and the ballerina Michaela DePrince. Beyoncé’s daughter, Blue Ivy, and husband Jay Z also made the visual album when the story turns and focuses on reconciliation.
Famous American Singer and Songwriter ‘Prince’ Died at the Age of 57
Yet another musical legend is gone. We’ve said goodbye to the greats Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston and now we will miss the legendary Prince. Prince was a famous American singer, songwriter, and a record producer, who forever changed the music industry with the sheer power of his imagination.
With his death on April 21st 2016, Prince has left a hole in the music industry that is going to be impossible to fill. Like a chameleon that changes its color with the environment, Prince was known to constantly reinvent himself to produce several hit albums. Prince’s music career lasted for 38 long years and in this time, he released 39 albums, won 7 Grammys, one Golden Globe, and even an Oscar.
He has had five number 1 singles and sold more than a 100 million copies. As if these accomplishments weren’t enough, he was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was one of the few artists in the world to have received acclaim in all the mediums, whether it was album sales or a movie. When he performed during the 2007 Super Bowl halftime, he garnered around 140 million TV viewers, a feat that compelled the commentators to proclaim it as the greatest halftime ever in the history of Super Bowl. Throughout his musical career, he dabbled in various forms of music, including, rock, R&B, pop, and free form jazz. His fashion influence is unmistakable. His music genius undeniable. His absence will be sorely felt for years to come.

A Month of Industry Moves
The Month of April has seen a lot of fashion industry moves, right from the French fashion house Yves Saint Laurent to the American brand Calvin Klein. Earlier this year, we covered the fact that Hedi Slimane stepped down from his position of creative director at Yves Saint Laurent. The company has recently confirmed that Anthony Vaccarello (previously, the creative director of Versus Versace) stepped into the creative director position at Yves Saint Laurent in April. The president and CEO of this French House explains, “Anthony Vaccarello impeccably balances the elements of provocative femininity and sharp masculinity in his silhouettes. He is the natural choice to express the essence of Yves Saint Laurent. I’m enthusiastic about embarking on a new era with Anthony Vaccarello, and together bringing the maison further success”.
Michele Norsa, the longstanding CEO of Italian company Salvatore Ferragamo, plans to step down this year, after the arrival of her successor. The spokesperson for the company shares, “Norsa has expressed the wish to prioritize family and to focus on new professional interests after a long period of intense efforts and rewarding results, whilst remaining fully committed to his current role until a new CEO is appointed”.
Also note, that the creative directors of Calvin Klein Collection, Italo Zucchelli and Francisco Costa, are leaving the brand. There are rumors that Raf Simons, mainly known for his stint as the creative director of Christian Dior women’s, will be picking up the creative reins at Calvin Klein. We’ll update you on this in next month’s recap.

April saw the premiere of the much anticipated season 6 of the hugely popular HBO series Game of Thrones. The world premiere of Game of Thrones took place on 10th April 2016 at the renowned Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles.
It makes our list because the actresses in attendance were clad stunningly in lovely, sultry, and feminine gowns and style. Actress Sophie Turner, aka Sansa Stark, was looking regal with her glorious braided updo and the sweeping one shoulder burgundy colored dress. Emilia Clarke, aka the Mother of the Dragons, was seen in a strapless black printed dress, with her hair tied at the back in a gold hair band. Lena Headey, (Cersei Lannister in the series), looked quite demure at the World Premiere in a floor length floral print dress. These women are not just mavens in the GoT world, but are fashionable divas and trendsetters in their own right.
