February Fashion Recap
Posted on March 07 2016
From new offerings of designer brands to high fashion wear, February continues to showcase the trends that are destined to dominate the rest of the year. The host month to the Oscars also welcomed much-awaited events such as the London Fashion Week and the acclaimed New York Fashion Week. Fashionistas and designers alike look forward to the month of February, as this is when the autumn and winter collections are released by the crème de la crème of the fashion industry – and February 2016 has not disappointed us.
If you have not been getting your daily dose of fashion news this month, there’s no need to fret. Here is a recap of the fashion highlights of February.
Oscars 2016 saw the best and worst red carpet outfits.
From Brie Larson in Gucci to Margot Robbie in a stunning Tom Ford, the Oscars 2016 brought the best of glitz, glam, and stunning jewelry to the fore. The Oscars are eagerly awaited by the who’s who of the fashion industry just as much as the recipients of the awards themselves. With the prettiest damsels and the most dapper men taking to the red carpet in their best ensembles, what’s not to like about this special night.
Wearing a black-and-nude lace Dior gown, Jennifer Lawrence (above) stole the show, as did Kate Winslet in a black liquid silk lamé custom Ralph Lauren Collection gown accented with Nirav Modi diamond drop earrings. Pregnant Oscar attendees such as Anne Hathaway, Chrissy Teigen, and Emily Blunt managed to revamp the red carpet dress code with sequined and embellished maternity gowns. The after party also gave the fashionistas plenty to drool on. Accompanied by her husband Jimmy Iovine, Liberty Ross actually recycled her silk charmeuse wedding dress at the after party. While repeating an outfit may be considered a fashion faux pas, Ross pulled it off perfectly and gives us all a reason to upstyle some of our favorite bandage dresses.
While many ladies got it absolutely right, the Oscars night was not without a few mishaps. As always, opinions vary, and many stylists thought Winslet and Lawrence should have chosen more flattering gowns to don for the gala. Alicia Vikander in her yellow high school gown, and Heidi Klum in her yards of lavender chiffon definitely wanted to make their own footprints in fashion’s cement. At the Vanity Fair after-party, Taylor Swift was in for a surprise, as Australian model Andreja Pejic wore the exact same black Alexandre Vauthier Couture gown (above). However, the duo took the inadvertent twinning in good cheer. P.S. Leonardo DiCaprio finally bagged an Oscar (6th time lucky), and the Internet has yet to stop talking about it.
Latest street-style trends were displayed at the New York Fashion Week.
The herald of latest trends, the New York Fashion Week took place in February 2016. This year, the NYFW shone the spotlight on fitness clothing, bomber jackets by Phillip Lim and Altuzarra, hybrid peacoat-bomber jackets by Alexander Wang, Rag & Bone shearling collars, and chunky heels by Oscar de La Renta, Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, and Proenza Schouler.
The week closed with a bang when Lady Gaga modelled an outfit at the Marc Jacobs Fall 2016 collection show (above). In keeping with the austere feel of the show, Lady Gaga was inconspicuous in an over-sized black coat, platform boots, and a big bow at the neck, complete with a matching pastel green purse. Kendall Jenner also walked the ramp wearing a large feathery outfit.
Gigi Hadid had a wardrobe malfunction during the Versace show at the Milan Fashion Week.
American model Jelena Noura “Gigi” Hadid is a television personality and fashion model, who is also known as ex-One Direction star Zayn Malik’s girlfriend.
While walking the runway for fashion maven Donatella Versace during the Fall/Winter Milan Fashion Week in February, Hadid suffered an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction when the chain-link strap on her Versace dress slipped off her shoulder. She took it in her stride like a trooper though and tweeted, “Wardrobe malfunctions happen on the runway every day of fw & are...unfortunate, lol, but let's talk instead about the new VERSACE CHOKERS & the bags & the boots & the coats & everythinnngggg, killin me Donatella @Versace!!!!!!!”
London Fashion Week celebrated glamorous parties and their patrons.
Following closely at the heels of the New York Fashion Week, the London Fashion Week catered more to the party-goers and glam-lovers amongst us than to the fitness crowd. Running from February 19th to the 23rd, the LFW AW16 featured much-awaited collections such as Fashion East by Lulu Kennedy, Topshop, Mulberry, Alexander McQueen, and Simone Rocha to name a few.
Adidas introduced an elite subscription box – Avenue A.
Manufacturer of top-end sports shoes, accessories, and apparel, Adidas AG is a German multinational brand known for its cutting-edge designs. Their latest venture is a pricey subscription box that they intend to ship called Avenue A.
This box is designed specifically for a “fitness fanatic who loves to be surprised”, and is touted to include three top-of-the-line sports fashion supplements, including some limited edition shoes, clothes, and workout clothing. Starting at $150 per box, the first shipments are set to be sent out once every quarter.
Rihanna’s “Work” looks took our breath away.
Barbadian artist Rihanna has made waves with her fancy looks in her new video “Work” featuring Drake, from her eighth album Anti. Styled by Anna Trevelyan and Mel Ottenberg, the video shows off Rihanna’s best assets and her flirty and fierce power bob. From Tommy Hilfiger’s island-inspired SS16 collection to a sheer glittery vintage tank paired with a customized ripped denim skirt, her “Work” ensembles have been the talk of the town in February.
Rihanna also posted a Twitter picture of herself listening to Anti on Dolce & Gabbana gold headphones in February (above). Though they are priced at a whopping $9,000, Rihanna’s endorsement caused them to be sold out in under 24 hours! She’s impressive and we love her work - pun intended.
Dolce & Gabbana told us what the ‘princess of today’ should wear.
Speaking of Dolce & Gabbana, the brand went all out during the Milan Fashion Week in February. The theme of their autumn/winter collection was “fairytale princess”, complete with all the paraphernalia that goes with it – think gold carriages, princess beds, and various other props.
The dresses themselves were all about the glitter and shine. Sequined dresses boasting Snow White collars, flowery coats a la Sleeping Beauty, and glittery chunky boots. “It’s the princess of today, the new generation. Every woman wants love, a prince, but the new generation is more independent. Look at Frozen. The biggest love, in the end, is for the sister”, said Stefano Gabbana backstage before the show.
Pantone released their top fall 2016 colors list.
New Jersey-based Pantone Inc. is known as the premier authority on all things color. The company released their Fashion Color Report for fall 2016 in February. The first two ranks were bagged by shades of blue, namely Riverside and Airy Blue. These were followed by Sharkskin, a shade of gray that rested at the number 3 spot. The list was well rounded and included various other colors such as Lush Meadow, Spicy Mustard, and Bodacious. This color forecast is for the men and women of fashion as most designers who use these colors to set off their fall apparel.

The list of the top 5 fashion retailers includes Marshall’s, Ross Dress for Less, Kohl’s Corp, and Macy’s (in that order).
Yeezy Boosts sold out in under 120 minutes.
Designed by Kanye West, the Yeezy Boost 350 shoes are created in collaboration with Adidas. Priced at a hefty sum of $350, these sneakers are the latest offering for the Adidas Originals and Yeezy athletic wear brand.
Originally released in August of 2015, the Yeezy shoes were restocked once again in February of 2016. If you are hoping to buy these pricey sneakers, you are going to have to wait for them to be restocked once more – the February stock sold out in less than a couple of hours after release.
